5 tips for successful onboarding

Tip 1: Focus on landing #

Set aside time for the onboarding and familiarization of your new colleague. The “real work” comes second. First focus on getting to know each other and making the connection and letting the new colleague land well in the team. That pays off later.

Also express this expectation to your new colleague. That also helps him or her to enjoy the first weeks. And I understand that the workload is high – due to the departure of that nice colleague – but it takes time to get the work done properly. For the first few weeks, give your new colleague the space to take it all in.

Tip 2: What is more familiar, often becomes more fun #

Make sure the new colleague learns more about your team. What is unknown is often not so much fun. What is more familiar often becomes more fun . For example, create an introductory exhibition with everyone’s favorite object. Or make an online test with our program with questions: what did you want to be earlier or are you an evening or morning person.

Tip 3: Make your (positive) attention grow #

Contact your (new) colleague every week. Go ahead ten minutes here. Name the positive things you noticed that week. Consciously omit the negative things. This way the new colleague will go home with a good feeling. What didn’t go so well, you can help your colleague with that.

Tip 4: Plan an (outdoor) activity as a team #

Plan an (outdoor) activity as a team that can only be realized by working together. This way you create the opportunity for the new colleague to get to know the team and to work with the team.

The detours app is a good example. Start your own walking competition with the team or take on the challenge against the rest of the Netherlands. This allows you to walk together in a fun way, without being at the same location. This way you motivate each other to take a detour every day.

Additional benefit: Taking a walk every day is important for your physical and mental health. You get more productivity and energy after walking a walk. It also helps you to slow down and improves your creativity.

Tip 5: Successes team board #

As an extension of this, you share the successes of last year with each other. Then create a team board with next year’s successes. A team member is responsible for every success. Discuss these successes and how you can help each other achieve these successes. And above all, choose successes that make working in this team fun or personal successes that you want to achieve!
